EMS vs. TENS: What’s the Difference?

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) therapy and TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) units are different, though both use electrical impulses for therapeutic purposes. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • EMS Therapy: EMS delivers electrical impulses to stimulate muscle contractions, helping to strengthen muscles, reduce spasms, and improve circulation. It’s commonly used in physical therapy to aid recovery from injuries, enhance muscle function, or support rehabilitation after surgery.
  • TENS Therapy: TENS targets nerves, using electrical currents to block pain signals and promote endorphin release. It’s primarily used for pain relief, addressing conditions like chronic back pain, arthritis, or nerve-related discomfort.

At our office, we assess your condition to determine whether EMS, TENS, or a combination is best for you. We then tailor the treatment and settings to ensure optimal comfort and results, helping you move and feel better.
