Q: I have pain in my feet all of the time. can you help by giving me some ideas to make the pain more bearable?
A: Protecting your body’s joints, including those in your feet and lower extremities, is important for your overall well-being and quality of life. Here are some ways to protect them:
- Use your back, arms and legs safely. For instance, when lifting something heavy, use your legs to bring the weight up, not just your arms and back.
- Keep your weight under control. Excess weight is a strain on all your joints, including those in your ankles and feet.
- Watch your diet – no one ever hears me on this the first time…” you can control inflammation of joints by eating the right foods. You all know what the right foods and wrong foods are. Don’t question it too much, just try for a full week to not have salt, flour, sugar, or pastas and grains. You will feel less joint pain.
- If a cane makes walking easier, use one. Use any device that makes daily routines easier. It’s easier, and less stressful for your joints, for instance, to use a cart to carry luggage or groceries.
- Stretch your joints and the muscles that make them move. If you don’t know how, then find out.
- Massage and chiropractic, as well as physical therapy can help you get a jump start on better joint function. Don’t hesitate as the longer you wait, the harder it is for these professionals to help you.
Of course, one of the best ways to protect the joints in your feet, ankles and knees is to wear supportive, properly fitting footwear. Couple the good footwear with custom made orthotics to correct imbalances and you will feel the positive difference. And one of the best exercises, not only for the joints in your feet and legs but for your overall health as well, is walking. Ask your chiropractor for some tips on exercises and other steps you can take to protect your joints.
